“It’s Happening in Hailey this winter; snowmobile hill climb, skijoring, snowbox derby, film festival on tap”

Winter in Hailey and the Wood River Valley means lots of snow and plenty of ways to enjoy it, including an exciting line up of unique events to fit varied interests - from snowmobile thrill seekers, to racing horses & skiers, to indie film lovers.  Here’s a rundown of what’s happening in Hailey this winter….

Klim the Mine Snowmobile Hill Climb, January 28-29

It’s a match-up of machines vs. mountains in the challenging Klim the Mine Snowmobile Hill Climb - a thrilling event for both pro and amateur participants and spectators. The Sawtooth Snowmobile Club and the Rocky Mountain States Hillclimb Association are joining together for the second year to put on this event at the Minnie Moore Mine in Bellevue, just south of Hailey, Aon the weekend of January 28-29. Races start at 8:00am each day, $5 admission fee, children under 12 free.

Wood River Extreme Skijoring Races, February 18-19

Fast horses and brave skiers combine for a weekend of skijoring excitement in Hailey. Skijoring is a sport that involves a skier being pulled by something, be it dogs, a snowmobile or whatever. But in the Wood River Valley, and other Western communities, horses are used.  A successful run of this race means crossing the finish line of the 600-900 foot course with the skier having executed one to three jumps ranging from three to six feet high and grabbing from three to nine rings. The rider must also grab a ring. Points are deducted for missed or dropped rings and missed jumps. Speed – which often reaches 40 miles per hour – is a factor. Winners are based on the combined overall score for both days. The Wood River Extreme Skijoring Association’s annual races will take place at Quigley Ranch in Hailey on Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19, starting at 12noon each day.  This family-friendly weekend event will also feature food booths, music, an auction and a dance. There is a gate fee of $5 per spectator, children 10 and under are free. No dogs allowed.
