SUMMARY:Grange reception to honor Ag. Persons of the Year - Squash Blossom Farms
DESCRIPTION:Please come and celebrate with the Upper Big Wood River Grange - A Potluck honoring Squash Blossom Farms.\n\nSaturday\, November 7\, 5:00-7:30pm with community\, friends and family - bring a dish to share. Live music too! RSVP - upperbigwoodriverid192@gmail.com. Grange Hall - 609 S. Third Ave.\, Hailey.\n\nHonoring Sara & Ed for their commitment to new community farming who partner locally to bring high yield mixed vegetables year round to the Wood River Valley. Founded in 2016\, they farm over 7 acres utilizing best practices for the health of the land they own and lease. They grow with minimal till\, a permanent bed system and have a closed ecosystem to minimize pests\, using rotation\, compost\, microbes\, and other natural amendments. Sara & Ed have a small flock of sheep using rotational grazing\, thus keeping the soil healthy while utilizing their compost. They are a part of CSA\, Community Supported Agriculture\, partnering with the local farmer's market\, local groceries\, restaurants and on-line sales. \n\n\n\nSara and Ed come from different backgrounds\, but their love of the land brought them together starting a farm using a successful business model to sustain their endeavors. Ed's family were dairy farmers in New Jersey. Ed attended University of Montana. Sara attending a small Eastern school that encouraged "out of the box learning" to get involved in local food production and she got the bug to farm herself. After college they met in Sun Valley\, (Sara's hometown)\, got married and the rest is history as they say. Their days are long\, but they manage to work it out together - one of their major accomplishments to date! Finding out what to grow is Ed's forte\, carrots have become a reliable staple for their income especially over the winter months. Sara integrates their work into the community. \n\n\n\nThey are not a legacy farm\, but consider their community farm to be an enterprise\, a way to make a living doing something they love. They are here for the present and for the future and deserve to be honored in the tradition of the Grange - "Built to Make Change"\, but preserving family and community.
