Name: SVC - Art History Lecture w/ Kristin Poole
Date: October 15, 2015
Time: 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM MDT
Event Description:
Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ own Artistic Director, Kristin Poole, will offer a special art history lecture on Modernism on Thursday, October 15, 5:30pm, at The Center in Ketchum. In her lecture, “The History of Modernism in Three,” Poole will use three notable Modernists works—Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain, René Magritte’s Ceci n’est pas une pipe and Meret Oppenheim’s Object (Le Déjeuner en fourrure)—to illustrate and explore the visual arts history of this philosophical and cultural movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The history of Modernism is complex and convoluted, full of tangents and transgressions, starts and stops. But it is also a story that we can begin to understand by asking some basic questions about representation, material and presentation. The lecture will explore three works of art that illustrate the challenges modernism posed to tradition and how each of these works shifted the conversation about what a work of art is and what it should be.

This lecture is a part of The Center’s current BIG IDEA multidisciplinary project Sleight of Hand that explores themes of artifice and illusion, authenticity and authorship that will run September 25 through November 27.
