Name: Just Eat It: Free Movie Screening for Hunger Awareness Month
Date: October 28, 2015
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM MDT
Event Description:
When filmmakers and food lovers Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin decided to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away, they thought the biggest challenge would be finding enough to eat. But as they dove – literally – into the issue of food waste from farm, through retail, to the back of their own fridge, what they found is truly shocking.

"For Idaho's Hunger Awareness month, we wanted to call attention to the topic of food waste—and ‘Just Eat It’ is just the eye-opening, inspiring film to do so," says Jeanne Liston, Executive Director of The Hunger Coalition. "We want to bring awareness to what locals can do to help reduce food waste in their households, and share what we do as an organization to rescue and distribute excess food."

In our country where one in 7 people are food insecure, the film’s images of squandered groceries are both shocking and powerfully compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences.

Local Food Alliance Director Ali Long states that “Repurposing otherwise wasted foods is a first line of defense against the economic and financial challenges of improved food security. There is so much food at our disposal (excuse the pun) – we need only adjust our expectations of presentation.”
To demonstrate the value of otherwise wasted food, Chef Hal Jardine from The Ram will create rescued food appetizers and Community School 8th grade students will make banana bread out of “orphaned” bananas from Atkinsons’ Markets. There will be a short food waste education discussion following the film, and copies of Waste Free Kitchen Handbook by food waste expert Dana Gunders (featured in the film) will be for sale. Complimentary drinks will be served.

A smorgasbord of snappy story and cinematic visuals, Just Eat It juxtaposes lush farmers fields with images of squandered food. In addition to Dana Gunders, the film features interviews with TED lecturer Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom, challenging viewers to open our eyes to an issue that is having devastating environmental and economical consequences around the globe.

The film, which Variety Magazine calls “hugely entertaining,” has been sweeping film festivals, and has won 13 awards, including People’s Choice Award (Calgary International), Emerging Canadian Filmmaker (Hot Docs), and the Grand Prize at the Yale Environmental Film Festival.

“The scale of food waste is tragic. We encountered dumpsters of unspoiled food, thousands of dollars of perfectly good organic chocolate, and that’s just scraping the surface,” says Just Eat It producer and subject Jen Rustemeyer. “It doesn't matter how sustainably something is grown if it doesn't get eaten."
