Event Description:
The Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society will host an easy fall field trip to a small grove of large Engelmann spruce on Saturday, September 13. Participants can help record the trees’ height, girth and crown width. Data will be submitted to the University of Idaho’s Idaho Big Tree Program which recognizes the largest individual tree of each species in the state. Participants should meet at: 1) Hailey Park and Ride to leave at 9:00 AM, or 2) Lake Creek Trailhead, 3.4 miles north of Ketchum, to leave at 9:30 AM, or 3) Highway 75 parking pullout near Cathedral Pines to leave at 9:45 AM. Expect to finish up about noon. Carpooling encouraged. Please, no dogs. Field trip leader Jay Dorr has a BS in Forest Resource Management from University of Idaho and recently retired from the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) after more than 40 years as Trails Manager. Jim Rineholt, also recently retired after 35 years as the SNRA’s forester, will use specialized forestry equipment to measure the spruces.
