February 22, 2018

Sun Valley, IDAHO — As part of its education programs, every year the Sun Valley Summer Symphony offers a multi-week summer music education program embracing students of all ages and abilities, called The Summer Music Institute. Now in its 21st year, registration for The Institute, which takes place July 30 through August 11, is now open for the 2018 season.
During The Institute, students interact with Symphony musicians, guest artists and conductors; while experiencing unique, high-level educational opportunities as they explore their love for music. The program is offered tuition-free due to the generosity of Sun Valley Summer Symphony supporters. Students pay only a nominal registration and materials fee.
With two enrollment tiers defined by age and musical ability, the program provides opportunities for students of all types. Instruction platforms include small and large ensemble experiences, electives and classes focused on technique, master classes, discussions and live performances, among others. Private instruction is also available for additional fees.
“Year after year, young musicians gather together with students who enjoy music as much as they do at The Institute,” says Kim Gasenica, Education Director. “They reconnect with old friends and meet new ones all in the spirit of creating beautiful music together.”
Through the tier of The Institute called The Experience (August 6–10, 2018), beginning through advanced second grade through high school music students experience the fun of studying music through orchestras, ensembles, classes, and master classes with leading instructors from the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. Students are placed in groups based on ability level and age. Instruction for piano, voice, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion are available.
In the other tier of The Institute, titled The Encounter (July 30–August 11, 2018), college undergraduates and exceptional high school students in strings, voice and piano encounter the thrill of learning through opportunities to study with world-renowned instructors of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and observe Symphony rehearsals, attend performances and meet the guest artists. From chamber music to opera workshops, the program creates an atmosphere of unique, exceptional summer instruction.
Enrollment is now open for both The Encounter and The Experience tiers of The Institute. Online registration is available on the Symphony website at svsummersymphony.org/education/summer-music-institute/. The application deadline for the Experience is May 1, 2018. Application for the Encounter, including submission of an audition recording required of all applicants, closes on April 1, 2018. Space is limited. Applications are accepted until programs are full.
