Make 5B Homeless Vet Free by Attending 1st Annual 5K Fun Run for First Ever Veteran Housing Assistance Program in the Wood River Valley

Ketchum, Idaho – The Sun Valley Board of Realtors Community Foundation is launching their new veterans housing assistance program, 5B Realtors for Veterans, with a 1st annual 5k Fun Run on Saturday, October 1st at Lions Park in Hailey. Registration is available online at www.5BVeterans.org.  Registrations completed before September 15 receive a race-day shirt.  Check-in for race participants, including day-of registrants, begins at 9AM.  Grumpy’s is providing a post-race lunch (tickets are available for purchase upon registration), and Sawtooth Brewery is providing free beer.

A first-of-its-kind program in the Wood River Valley, 5B Realtors for Veterans will give 100% of the proceeds raised from the 5K Fun Run to sustainable housing for local veterans and their families.
According to the 2010-2014 U.S. Census, there are approximately 1,500 Blaine County veterans and an alarming number of them and their families live below the poverty line. Nationwide, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) estimates that roughly 1.4 million veterans are deemed “at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.”

“Veterans across the nation, not just locally, sacrifice their lives to protect us.  By attending this 5K Fun Run, Wood River Valley community members can be a part of providing the most basic needs to our local heroes,” said Amanda Ornelas, Chief Executive Officer, Sun Valley Board of Realtors Community Foundation. “We owe them at least that much.”

Sun Valley Board of Realtors Community Foundation is aware of various families in the area that do not have adequate housing; and 5B Realtors for Veterans is designed to change that.  The launch of this new program is the initial step in improving the lives of the Valley’s veterans, and the commitment to ensure that the nationwide epidemic of veterans homelessness never severely impacts our county.
