Event Description:
The Mask You Live In Film Screening followed by Q and A The Advocates’ Teen Interns, the ETC’s, in collaboration with The Community Library, will be screening the film, The Mask You Live In on April 24, at 6:30pm, at The Community Library in Ketchum. The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. With pressure from the media, peers and even adults in their lives, these young men and boys confront the often confusing messages that teach them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women and resolve conflicts through violence. This strict adherence to gender roles intersects with ethnicity, socio-economic status, class and culture to create a myriad of identity issues boys and men must navigate to become ‘real’ men. Research shows that compared to girls, boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications, fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives. After outlining the issue, The Mask You Live Inultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men. The Advocates ETC’s, Jeff Matsushita from the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence and The Community Library invite the audience to stay for a Q and A after the screening.
