Name: Seed Packaging Fall Gathering
Date: October 26, 2017
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM MDT
Event Description:
Celebrate the harvest season with our annual seed packaging gathering, a fun and informative event, hosted by Seed Librarians from the Wood River Seed Library. With your helping hands we will package a variety of locally harvested seeds, adapted to our climate. The seed packets will be shared with the public for the next gardening season. Anyone interested in gardening or seed saving, from novice to experienced, is invited to attend. It is a festive opportunity to meet friends, share stories, and learn about seed saving and cleaning techniques. And you also get to bring some seeds home too. Seed packets and processing accessories will be provided. In the past few years we have gathered and distributed hundred of locally saved seed packets. All are encouraged to bring some locally saved seeds to share. BYO beverage, snacks and community spirit. The events are co-sponsored by the Ketchum Community Library and the Upper Big Wood River Grange.

The Wood River Seed Library (WRSL) is a group of local gardeners, who grow and freely share with the community the best of each year’s locally grown seed harvest.  For the past three years the Community Library in Ketchum has been the host and distribution point for these local seeds.  The Library offers this community service as well as ongoing programming around seed saving and sharing that includes spring and fall seed exchanges.

Our local efforts are in alignment and co-operation with Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance, (online at: www.RockyMountainSeeds.org) a nonprofit organization dedicated to assuring a diverse and abundant supply of locally grown seeds through education, networking and establishing community-based models of seed stewardship. Since its founding in 2014, RMSA has organized several regional seed initiatives, including Heritage Grain Trials and the Seed Stewards program, which inspires and equips individuals to grow, save and share locally adapted seed varieties.  In addition, the RMSA offers an innovative and acclaimed series of “Seed School” courses, which train people in the practical art, science, and business of seed saving.
